ENGINE FIRE ON MOTOR YACHT ALERTS LIFEBOAT

Engine Fire on the Great Escape

A luxury motor cruiser, ‘Great Escape’, with two people on board, drifted on to Hurst Beach following a fire in her engine room on Thursday (24 June).

Yarmouth RNLI lifeboat and the Coastguard helicopter went to her assistance. The lifeboat launched their Y-boat RIB to take their mechanic aboard and it was found that the motor yacht’s own fire extinguisher system had put out the fire. However the yacht was aground.

The volunteer lifeboat crew secured a line to her stern to avoid damage to her rudder and propeller and plucked her off the beach stern first before transferring the tow to the bow. She was then towed to Lymington for repairs.
