24 HOURS AT SEA FOR THE YARMOUTH RNLI LIFEBOAT

Yarmouth RNLI Lifeboat

The Yarmouth RNLI Lifeboat, Eric and Susan Hiscock (Wanderer) spent a total of 24 hours at sea attending to no less than six rescues during one of the busiest Augusts on record.

The tasks included: Restarting a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) which had broken down off Hurst Castle. A six and a half hour ‘shout’ to attend to the yacht, Cathala, 21 miles south west of the Needles whose propeller had fouled a lobster pot.

Two hours were spent establishing a tow for the yacht Blue Bay which had steering failure. A crew member on the yacht Jibe had to be mediacally evacuated for hospital treatment after having first aid from the lifeboat crew.

The local fishing boat Galwad y Mor, called the lifeboat after having fouled its own fishing gear in its propeller and had to be towed to Yarmouth. A rescue that took eight hours.

The lifeboat’s last ‘shout’ of the month was to the yacht Zorra on 30 August. She was taking in water 22 miles South of the Needles. Two crewmen were put aboard Zorra and the lifeboat escorted her to Lymington. This rescue took five and half hours.

Traditionally, August is a busy month for the Yarmouth RNLI Lifeboat. 2010 was no exception.
