During September in 1940, the Battle of Britain was raging in the skies above the Isle of Wight, but in Ventnor, a public service was opening its doors for the first time.
Ventnor Library started serving the town’s public 70 years ago and is celebrating its anniversary with a photographic display called ‘From War Time to Your Time’.
The slide show, which has been put together by both the council’s library and heritage services, also includes pictures loaned by members of the public.
Among the images on show include pictures taken of Ventnor Carnival in the 1940s, the town’s pier in its prime in the 1970′s and the installation of the popular ‘Isle of Wight’ paddling pool.
There is also a sequence of photographs showing library staff and many activities both from recent times and the past. The display will run until the end of November. For further information, contact Andrew Walker on (01983) 203880 or email andrew.walker@iow.gov.uk
