COMPOST STOLEN FROM ISLAND GARDEN CENTRE

Police are investigating an allegation of theft from a garden centre on the Isle of Wight.

52 bags of compost were reported stolen from Springbank nurseries off Winford Road, Winford near Newchurch at approximately 11.00pm on Saturday, March 5, 2011. Damage to the garden centre’s perimeter fence was also reported.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: “Police are pursuing several lines of enquiry in the community. It’s believed a van was used to transport the stolen compost bags. We’re particularly keen to hear from any witnesses who might remember seeing anybody acting suspiciously, or a van being driven in the Winford and surrounding areas late on Saturday night or Sunday morning. Anyone offered compost bags to buy second hand in suspicious circumstances is also asked to contact us or Crimestoppers.”

A possible suspect was described:

  • Male
  • White
  • Approximately six foot tall
  • Wearing hat and jeans
