Cowes RNLI lifeboat raced to the aid of a yacht that was drifting into the main shipping channel in the Solent on Saturday evening.
The 35 foot sloop Chianti had been on passage from Chichester to Falmouth, crewed by a man and a teenage boy. With no wind, a growing flood tide and poor visibility because of fine rain and fading light, off Ryde Sands, they turned to their engine to make headway through the Solent, only to find the engine would not work.
As the yacht drifted helplessly in the gloomy conditions into the channel used by cruise liners and other shipping, they made an urgent call for help to Solent coastguards. Cowes lifeboat, with Scott Armiger at the helm, managed to quickly locate the yacht despite the poor visibility. A lifeboat crew member was put aboard and the yacht was taken in tow.
It was finally moored alongside Trinity Wharf at Cowes. Cowes lifeboat had been off-station for over two hours.
