Andrew Turner, the Island’s MP has acted following the announcement this morning that although the Olympic Torch will be visiting Guernsey, Jersey, Southampton and Portsmouth and a number of Scottish Islands, there had been no confirmation that it will come to the Isle of Wight.
On hearing the news this morning Mr Turner contacted Lord Coe’s office and the Olympic Organising Committee to make urgent representations that the torch should come to the Island.
Mr Turner said, “I made it clear how strongly I felt that the Island must be included in the tour of the United Kingdom. I have now been given firm assurances that the Island will be included in the tour and an official announcement will be made later on in the year. I am very pleased to be able to let Islanders know that we will all have the opportunity to see the Olympic Torch on the Island.”
