Near perfect conditions for shop Regatta 2011

The second annual NHS SHIP regatta was favoured with near perfect conditions. Held on the 4th June, colleagues from Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust and NHS Isle of Wight fought a fiercely contended two race series in bright sunshine and twelve knots of breeze.

While the fleet was close together throughout the racing, ultimately it was Isle of Wight entry ‘Jenny ‘ that took the honours. Jenny was crewed by Consultant ENT surgeon Maher El Alami and surgical trainee Dale Duncombe.

Maher commented: “We all had a great day of sailing. The regatta was very well organised and it was great to have the opportunity to sail with colleagues and friends.” He added “it’s a welcome break to be sailing the Solent on a beautiful day like this”.

Hosted by NHS Isle of Wight and held at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club in Cowes and funded entirely by the entrants, the event is intended as an opportunity for colleagues from the various regional NHS organisations to engage in a bit of friendly competition on the water.

NHS Isle of Wight’s Chief Operating Officer and Skipper of Ellie, Karen Baker, says: “This year was bigger and better than last year and we already have great expectations for next year – I’m looking forward to trying to keep the NHS SHIP regatta trophy on the Island”.

Next year’s event is scheduled for June 16th 2012, to pre-register your interest in attending, please email Vicky.burgess@iow.nhs.uk
