Wightlink Islanders slumped to another heavy defeat on the road last night against the Sheffield/Scunthorpe combined team at Owlerton Stadium, Sheffield 61-32. The Islanders only provided a single heat race winner all evening which came down to a tactical ride by skipper Nick Simmons in heat 11.
Co-promoter Chris Hunt said, “The boys all tried hard against a very strong side which have no weakness and again it will be a very tough home fixture next month against them.”
The Sheffield/Scunthorpe combined side were always going to be the toughest away fixture of the season as predicted as early as the Islanders press day with very solid scoring throughout their side headed by an impressive Richie Worrall 15+1 and Ashley Birks 14.
The Islanders return to Smallbrook next Tuesday with Newport Hornets the visitors that evening with the normal 7.30pm start time. After beating them in May 56-38 the Islanders management will be looking for a much improved performance.
